BANGKOK BAR

Ku Thai Bar

Sathorn’s Balinese island bar escape.

The buzz: Tucked above Suan Phlu's hidden-away Thai-French seafood shack Kutai, this cute Balinese bar focuses on Thai liquor and seasonal fruit in its blends.

The decor: Climb the small staircase to find a wooden, half open-air space that resembles a Balinese beach shack, filled with cute chairs and colorful cushions for lounging. Following in the theme of downstairs’ restaurant, the chilled out vibe makes it the perfect spot for Sathorn’s hard-working professionals to wind down after a long day.

The drinks: You guessed it: easy-drinking, beach-style—but don’t judge them too soon, as they’re definitely worth making the trip for. The menu is split into two sections, tea-infused and signature. We loved the Green Smoke (B350), which mixes Meridian VSOP—a Thai brandy by ThaiBev (who also brew Chang)—green tea-infused rum and rosemary smoke—a combination that really freshens up the spirit-heavy drink. If you’re determined to get into the beach-drinking spirit, their Coco Palm (B370) is a twisted version of a pina colada, which combines the strong Thai rum, Phraya, with coconut milk in place of Malibu, mixed with pineapple and lime. Another one that makes great use of Thai liquor is the Phagan (B350), with the Thai white spirit, Bangyikhan, infused with plum tea, pineapple juice and a squeeze of lemon.

The food: Thai gab glaem (drinking food) comes in a pin toh set, including Thai grilled meatballs, laab moo and grilled pork (B299). Spicy goong chae nam pla (raw prawns marinated in fish sauce and chili) is also served at B180.

The music: Head there on Fridays or Saturdays from 8:30-10pm to catch a Thai instrumental band busting out the likes of Ed Sheeran and other chart-toppers on ra nad (Thai xylophone), khui (Thai flute) and ta pon (Thai two-faced drum).

The crowd: After-workers looking for a place to hang out and catch up with friends.

Why we’d come back: The live band on Friday nights is really something and, besides, the whole vibe is just too cute not to come back.
