The Champagne Bar
Bangkok’s fanciest speakeasy is perfect for special celebrations.
The buzz: This super-luxurious speakeasy is hidden up on the 57th floor of the new Waldorf, serving a Champagne selection that’s perfect for celebrations.
The decor: The fact that the elevators only go up to the 56th floor won’t even make you mad, since you get to pretend you’re royalty as you walk up the palatial marble double staircase to the next level. When you get there, it all looks pretty simple—you wouldn’t even know there’s a bar on this floor. Without giving too much away, the artwork is the key to the door. Once you’ve figured that out, inside you will find a very shiny, glamorous walk that leads to what looks like your millionaire friend’s living room (‘cause we’ve all got one of those, right?), filled with big comfortable couches, lamps, glass cabinets with expensive whiskeys on display, and art pieces.
The drinks: There are four choices of Champagne by the glass, with prices starting at B680 for Charles Collin Blanc de Noirs Brut, NV, up to B1,200 for a glass of Billecart-Salmon Brut Rose, NV. There are over 25 selections by the bottle with prices ranging from B3,400 up to 32,250 for a bottle of 1999 Billecart-Salmon, Clos Saint-Hilaire. If you go with a couple of friends, we recommend just grabbing a B4,000 bottle of something, then you’ll be set for the night. Classic cocktails are on offer too, served in front of you from a little cart (B850-900). Light Champagne-friendly bites like caviar, oysters and charcuterie boards are available from B550-12,800.
The crowd: Sophisticated professionals with incomes on the higher end of the scale.
Why we would come back: The price range is slightly higher than what we’re used to in Bangkok, though not so high as to be completely unaffordable, making this place perfect for when you want to treat yourself or celebrate a special occasion.
